Hello everyone!!
Yesterday I had a great adventure which I will now tell you about!
So to start the day off I had New Testament as usual and then
we had ancient near eastern studies where
we learned about the ancient temple mount
and Herods temple.
We identified the pinnacle of the wall
in which it refers to in the scriptures where Satan tempts
Jesus to jump off the pinnacle to see if he will be saved.
We also learned saw a reconstruction drawing of Herods temple and the temple
mount. It was soo neat!
After class I went and took a nap until 3 o'clock and then
I met with my friends and we ventured out into the wet city!
We were planning on going to the Rockefeller musuem but we
got there and it closed at 3 so that was a bust
but then we decided to go to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.
Well to make our way to the church we had to walk through the Old
City and since we weren't pressed for time
that meant meandering through shops!
We found a shop we really liked that had a variety of goods
including dishes, shirts, skirts, pillow cases, jewelry, etc.
It was a big shop that was clean and well established. We loved it!
We stayed in there for a good hour and made some purchases
and then we headed to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.
The Church of the Holy Sepulcher is this catholic church
that is owned by three different type
of Catholic denominations; the Roman Catholics, Greek Orthodox, and Armenian.
They all have their different worship areas in the church.
What makes this church special??
Well it was built over the spots that the Catholics believe to be golgotha, Christs tomb, and where Christ was tied to the pillar and tortured, among other things.
When you walk into the entrance of the church
there is the stone on which they believe that Christ was prepared for burial.
People are always kneeling at the stone and kissing it.
The main attraction of the church is this big box building which
is built over the site of Christs tomb, the tomb being under the ground since
the city has been built up so much throughout the years.
We went into the church and found some Armenian priests who after talking to them for a little while proceeded to give us our own private tour!!
The line to get into the sepulcher was probably a hundred people long
but the priest just cut everyone and led us into it.
He then opened this cabinet thing and showed us this huge
rock that was in there.
He said that the rock had been taken up from the original tomb and put in there and that
they generally don't show people that.
It was really neat!
He then showed us all the different sections of the
church and taught us about what each are represented and why each area was special.
Anyway, I have to go!
I will do a post about Bethlehem soon, I promise!!
